4. Socializing in the Evening

Early in the evening the General Secretary, the President and their wives attended a special ballet performance at the Bolshoi Theater. Leading ballet dancers of the Bolshoi performed seven scenes to music by Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, Khachaturian, Shostakovich and Drigo. Despite the tension generated in the press conferences, both leaders were described as being “in good humor” as they sat in the royal box in this 19th Century neo-classical theater, decorated with Soviet and American national flags, listened to the orchestra play the national anthems of both countries and watched the ballet performance.156

After the ballet, the General Secretary, the President and their wives drove to an official guest residence in the northwestern outskirts of Moscow for a private supper. After supper, the Reagans returned to Spaso House, stopping briefly along the say for a stroll around the flood-lit Red Square shortly before midnight. Walking hand-in-hand the Reagans were cheered by hundreds of onlookers. “We are here because Nancy had not seen it, and we’re leaving tomorrow and I didn’t want her to miss it,” the President said as they stood below the multi-colored domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral.157

So ended the fourth day of the Moscow Summit.
